Mesa Airlines is an FAA Part 121-certified air carrier with a fleet of over 130 aircraft consisting of Boeing 737, Q400 Dash 8, Embraer 175, and CRJ 900.
Mesa Airlines had difficulty identifying and reporting recurring defects across their large fleet. When issues were reported, they were done manually and were prone to human error. This led to poor visibility into the historical data of their aircraft, making it more difficult to find and fix the root cause of the issue.

With a large fleet of aircraft to operate across their major airline partners – including American Airlines, United Airlines, and DHL -- Mesa Airlines puts high importance on their fleet maintenance and reliability.
Fleet reliability expert, Steven Remedi, knew his team’s biggest challenge was keeping track of aircraft defects across the fleet. During the flight day when there’s an issue, pilots grab the logbook, call maintenance control, and report the defect where a “defect ID” is assigned.
With large fleets, things move quickly and spelling mistakes, abbreviations and miscoded ATAs occur throughout the logbooks making the reports on the history of the aircraft hard to read and understand – and likely not as detailed as they should be. All of this leads to increased difficulty for engineers to get to the root cause of the problem.
“I would go back through the history, and it was very hard to research. It wasn't robust. It wasn't complete. And it was very prone to human error.”
Steve Remedi talks about the difficulties that come with managing a large fleet, and how ChronicX helps to ease the difficulties on a day-to-day basis.
Having visibility into the history of an aircraft is important because it helps diagnose the root cause of an issue. Once the root cause of an issue is known, the chance of that issue occurring again is very slim. Steve needed a tool that could accurately capture the aircraft history so that his team could easily find and fix recurring defects.
He turned to ChronicX as the solution and used the data mining capabilities to better understand the history of the fleet. With ChronicX, Steve was able to dig into the defects and histories of the aircraft, analyze the data, and report to the engineers so they could improve the overall fleet health.

Steve mentioned that “by being able to identify the nature of the repeat issues and see what the history is of that defect, they can fix them a little bit more aggressively – and sooner.”
ChronicX uses natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning to analyze defect text, meaning it can detect synonyms, spelling mistakes and abbreviations. The software is then able to decipher the underlying context of the defect text allowing searches to be more accurate.
By reducing impact of human error, automatically identifying repeat defects and improving the accuracy of defect searches, Mesa Airlines experienced significant time savings when researching the history of the entire fleet.
