I realized the value long before we even had access to the test platform. When I saw the product demo, I knew exactly what I was going to be able to do with it.”

Steve-Testimonial-1
Steven Remedi
Manager of Fleet Reliability | Mesa Airlines

With a large fleet of aircraft to operate across their major airline partners – including American Airlines, United Airlines, and DHL -- Mesa Airlines puts high importance on their fleet maintenance and reliability.

Fleet reliability expert, Steven Remedi, knew his team’s biggest challenge was keeping track of aircraft defects across the fleet. During the flight day when there’s an issue, pilots grab the logbook, call maintenance control, and report the defect where a “defect ID” is assigned.

With large fleets, things move quickly and spelling mistakes, abbreviations and miscoded ATAs occur throughout the logbooks making the reports on the history of the aircraft hard to read and understand – and likely not as detailed as they should be. All of this leads to increased difficulty for engineers to get to the root cause of the problem.

“I would go back through the history, and it was very hard to research. It wasn't robust. It wasn't complete. And it was very prone to human error.”

Steve Remedi talks about the difficulties that come with managing a large fleet, and how ChronicX helps to ease the difficulties on a day-to-day basis.

Unlocking Aircraft History

Having visibility into the history of an aircraft is important because it helps diagnose the root cause of an issue. Once the root cause of an issue is known, the chance of that issue occurring again is very slim. Steve needed a tool that could accurately capture the aircraft history so that his team could easily find and fix recurring defects.

He turned to ChronicX as the solution and used the data mining capabilities to better understand the history of the fleet. With ChronicX, Steve was able to dig into the defects and histories of the aircraft, analyze the data, and report to the engineers so they could improve the overall fleet health.

“With ChronicX, I can mine the data in so many different ways,” Steve mentioned. By being able to search, visualize, and analyze the fleet history, Mesa Airlines was able to easily understand and improve their fleet health.

Saving Time with Visibility

For Mesa Airlines, using ChronicX has significantly improved their time savings -- not only when it comes to searching discrepancies across their fleet, but also in the time it takes to fix repeat issues.

With a large fleet of over 130 aircraft, there are a lot of parts and items that need to be reported on daily. Being able to search and visualize fleet health can be critical to efficient operations.

Steve mentioned that “by being able to identify the nature of the repeat issues and see what the history is of that defect, they can fix them a little bit more aggressively – and sooner.”

Eliminating Human Error

ChronicX uses natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning to analyze defect text, meaning it can detect synonyms, spelling mistakes and abbreviations. The software is then able to decipher the underlying context of the defect text allowing searches to be more accurate.

By reducing impact of human error, automatically identifying repeat defects and improving the accuracy of defect searches, Mesa Airlines experienced significant time savings when researching the history of the entire fleet.

“ChronicX is an absolute game changer. It used to take me 10-15 minutes to research a single item. Now, I can research my entire fleet in 10 minutes or less.”

Steve Remedi talks about some of the time savings and other efficiencies he has seen since bringing ChronicX on board at Mesa Airlines.

Cutting Costs While Improving Safety

To evaluate the cost savings that ChronicX brought to Mesa Airlines, Steve broke it down into a four-part matrix:

  1. 1. Delay Reduction: 5-10 reduced delays per week.
    2. Cancels Reduction: 3 cancels per month.
    3. Safety Improvement: 10% reduction in incidents associated with safety events.
    4. Efficient Use of Parts: Reduction in ‘No Fault Found’ (NFF) charges, improved parts availability, and reduction in ‘Aircraft on Ground’ (AOG) events.

Seeing efficiency and safety improvements in these four areas, Mesa Airlines was able to attribute a total of ~$400K overall cost savings to the usage of ChronicX.
